Kirchweih on the Upper Main
The Zeulner Kerwa is the local Kirchweih of the market town Marktzeuln in the Lichtenfels district of Bavaria. Kerwa is the Franconian term for Kirchweih – the festival commemorating the anniversary of the local church's consecration, which over the centuries has evolved into the most important secular village festival. The Zeulner Kerwa traditionally takes place on the third weekend in October and is organized by local associations.
Tradition and Programme
A Franconian Kerwa follows a tried-and-tested multi-day schedule. Typical elements include:
- Kärwabaum: a decorated tree erected by the Kärwaboum (young men responsible for the Kerwa)
- Festival tent with brass band music and Franconian beer
- Kärwaboum and Kärwamadli (young men and women) in traditional costume, who lead the festivities
- Franconian delicacies: Bratwürste (sausages), Schäufele (pork shoulder), and Kärwaküchle (Kerwa doughnuts)
The festival begins on Friday evening, followed by festivities throughout the weekend and the traditional closing on Monday.
Marktzeuln in the Gottesgarten
Marktzeuln is located at the confluence of the Main and Rodach rivers in the Upper Main Valley, a region also known as the Gottesgarten am Obermain (Garden of God on the Upper Main) due to its high density of monasteries, churches, and pilgrimage sites. Situated between Lichtenfels, the 'German Basket City', and Burgkunstadt, the town is deeply rooted in Franconian tradition. The Kirchweih here is more than just a folk festival: it is living village community and part of Upper Franconian identity.
Franconian Kirchweih Culture
The Zeulner Kerwa is part of the dense Kirchweih season in the Lichtenfels district and the Upper Main Valley. Throughout autumn, the region's villages celebrate their Kerwa – a tradition passed down from generation to generation. For visitors from outside, the Zeulner Kerwa offers an opportunity to experience authentic Franconian festival culture away from the major folk festivals.
