The Upper Franconian Altstadtfest on the historic market square of the shoe city on the Obermain
Burgkunstadt in the Lichtenfels district is one of Upper Franconia's oldest towns (first documented mention 1059, town charter by 1323 at the latest). The historic market square is surrounded by one of the most densely preserved half-timbered ensembles in Franconia — colorful gables, carved beams, and the German Shoemakers' Museum tell of its industrial heyday as the "Franconian Pirmasens." With the founding of the first shoe factory in 1888, Burgkunstadt became the center of the Bavarian shoe industry — up to 12,000 pairs of shoes were produced here daily.
The Altstadtfest was launched in 1982 and has been celebrated at multi-year intervals ever since. The town of Burgkunstadt, together with local associations — music associations, dance groups, sports clubs, and the fire department — organizes the event. The festival is considered one of the most atmospheric Altstadtfeste in the Lichtenfels district.
Traditionally, the festival kicks off on Friday evening with an open-air concert on the market square, opened by the Burgkunstadt Music Association. Local acts like the band Klangfeder or the party band Heaven heat things up, while dance groups showcase choreography between sets. Saturday and Sunday feature further stage programs, club catering, and hands-on activities for families.
The late-night shopping Market Sunday on the last day of the festival is the biggest crowd-puller: shops open, vendor stalls line the old town alleys, and the entire city festival with stage programs and family activities runs from 10 a.m. onwards. A classic Upper Franconian Stadtfest that brings entire family clans from the district together.
Burgkunstadt is located in the Lichtenfels district in Upper Franconia — the "German Basket City" region. Those visiting the Altstadtfest might also consider a trip to the neighboring towns of Lichtenfels and Vierzehnheiligen with its pilgrimage basilica, a Baroque masterpiece by Balthasar Neumann.
The 2026 Altstadtfest brings three days of city festival atmosphere to the half-timbered ensemble of the shoe city. Opening concert on Friday, festival operations on Saturday with dance group performances and a party band, and on Sunday the traditional Market Sunday with vendor stalls and shops open late. The exact band lineup will be announced promptly by the City of Burgkunstadt.
