Atmospheric parish Advent market around the St. Johann community center in Dillingen
Dillingen/Saar is part of the Saarlouis district and lies at the confluence of the Saar and Prims rivers, in the heart of the industrially shaped west of the Saarland. While the city center boasts a large Christmas market, "Überm Berg" — the higher district around the parish church of St. Johannes der Täufer — has preserved its own, much more intimate Advent market. If you're looking for a parish courtyard atmosphere instead of big-city hustle and bustle, this is the place to be.
The focus is on the St. Johann Community Center at Kerlinger Straße 28. Festively decorated stalls offer homemade sewn items, handmade crafts, Christmas decorations, and small artisanal pieces — much of it made by parish members and local associations themselves. Food stalls serve bratwurst, homemade soups, waffles, crêpes, mulled wine, and punch. The prices are refreshingly down-to-earth, and the proceeds go back into community work.
For children, the visit from St. Nicholas is traditionally the highlight. On both days, there is also a small supporting program: musical contributions from the parish, Advent songs, occasional short performances by local choirs or brass ensembles. The atmosphere is familiar — many visitors know each other, and even newcomers are quickly drawn into conversation.
The organizer is the Förderverein der Pfarrgemeinde St. Johannes der Täufer, Dillingen e.V. (Friends of the Parish Community of St. Johannes der Täufer, Dillingen) in cooperation with other local associations. The proceeds benefit community work — from renovations to youth and social projects in the parish. A classic Saarland parish market, therefore, driven by the commitment of volunteers.
For everyone who finds the large Christmas markets between Saarbrücken, Trier, and Luxembourg too commercial and is looking for the genuine, small, neighbor-made Advent atmosphere. Combine your visit with a walk through old Dillingen or a detour to the impressive Dillinger Hütte — industrial culture and Advent romance are only a few minutes apart here.
The 2026 edition follows the proven format: on Saturday afternoon and Sunday, the St. Johann community center on Kerlinger Straße will be the focal point of a small, heartwarming Christmas market. Parish members, local associations, and the Friends' association jointly create an offering that deliberately does not follow commercial standards.
With mulled wine, bratwurst, homemade items, and a visit from St. Nicholas, everything is there that makes a good parish market in the Saarland.
The final program for 2026 will likely be announced in November via the City of Dillingen and the Parish Community of Dillingen.
Free admission. Food, drinks, and sales items are offered at moderate prices; the proceeds support community work.
By train to Dillingen (Saar) station, from there approx. 15 minutes on foot or by bus uphill to the Überm Berg district. By car via the A8 (exit Dillingen), parking is available around the parish church, but limited.

Hotels in Dillingen itself (Hotel Saarland Therme in Rilchingen-Hanweiler is nearby, hotels in Saarlouis, Merzig) or classically in Saarbrücken with a short journey by car/train.
For those who want to explore the region, combine the Advent market with a visit to the Saarschleife near Mettlach (approx. 25 min by car) or the large Christmas market in Saarbrücken on St. Johanner Markt.
