Spring and Easter market to kick off the market season in the Saarlouis district
When the stalls are set up on Dillingen's market square on Maundy Thursday – the Thursday before Easter – the market season in the Saarlouis district is officially opened. The Dillingen Maundy Thursday Market has established itself as a fixture in the Saarland spring calendar for almost three decades: a one-day market that celebrates both Easter and spring.
More than 30 exhibitors present their products on the market square. Florists with spring and Easter arrangements, wood carvers and turners with Easter decorations, felt and textile artists with bags, scarves, and home textiles, jewelry manufacturers with handmade pieces made of silver and bronze. Also, beekeepers with honey and beeswax products, cheese specialties from Saarland and the Palatinate, homemade spreads, and savory specialties.
The official opening is traditionally held at 11 a.m. by Mayor Christian Finkler. Afterwards, the market is open continuously from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. – those who come early have the first choice at the stalls.
A highlight for families is the popular petting zoo of the Dillingen Small Animal Breeders' Association, which brings chickens, rabbits, guinea pigs, and other small animals every year. In addition, the City Youth Welfare Office offers Easter crafts for children – painting eggs, making Easter nests, creating small spring decorations.
Dillingen, as a former steel city – home of the Dillinger Hütte – is primarily known for its industrial past. The Maundy Thursday Market is a charming reminder that this medium-sized center in Saarland is more than just blast furnaces and rolling mills: a place with a lively city center, a well-kept market square, and a citizenry that cherishes its markets. The market is the prelude to a series of festivals that animate Dillingen's market square throughout the year.
As every year, the Maundy Thursday Market is the official start of the Dillingen market season. In 2026, Maundy Thursday falls on April 2nd. The event takes place outdoors on the market square, with directions from the train station.
