Colorful autumn town festival in Dillingen city center — with Sunday shopping
Dillingen/Saar, with around 20,000 inhabitants, is one of the largest towns in the Saarlouis district, known primarily for its steel industry (Dillinger Hütte) and the shopping street Saarbrücker Straße. Twice a year, the shops and squares of the city center become the scene of town festivals — in summer the Kultur-Stadtfest, in autumn the Herbstding. Both are jointly organized by the city and the Kultur- und CityMarketing Dillingen e.V. (KCM).
The Herbstding is classically Saarlandic: not huge, but densely packed and warmly organized. Between Saarbrücker Straße, Marktplatz, and the city center alleys, there are stalls with autumn decorations, jewelry, arts and crafts, beekeeping products, mushroom exhibitions, toys, and of course culinary offerings — from bratwurst and potato pancakes to Federweißer (new wine) and onion cake. There is live music on at least one stage, often featuring horn blowers, oldie bands, and barrel organ players.
For children, the Herbstding is an experience: a petting zoo with rare poultry, blacksmith demonstrations, puppet theater on both days, and play activities organized by the city's youth services. Sunday is traditionally the day for the bird of prey show — presented by local hunters, with falcons, buzzards, and owls up close.
The Sunday of the Herbstding features open shops — a rarity in Saarland and an important date for local retailers. Shops around Saarbrücker Straße and Marktplatz open their doors in the afternoon (typically 1 PM–6 PM), offering promotions, tastings, and special deals. Those who had planned to shop anyway can kill two birds with one stone.
Dillingen is centrally located in the Saarlouis district, directly on the A8 motorway between Saarlouis and the Luxembourg border. The Herbstding attracts visitors from all over western Saarland, from Mettlach in the north via Saarlouis to the French border. Families from Luxembourg and Lorraine also often use the Sunday shopping as an occasion for a short weekend trip.
The Herbstding is not an over-commercialized event with major sponsors, but is supported by local clubs, showmen, and the KCM. This is precisely what makes its charm: down-to-earth, friendly, with a clear connection to the city and its associations. If you are looking for the Saarland autumn lifestyle beyond the big Volksfeste (popular festivals), this is the place to be.
In 2026, the city of Dillingen, together with Kultur- und CityMarketing Dillingen (KCM), once again invites you to the traditional autumn town festival. The city center between Marktplatz and Saarbrücker Straße will become a festival mile, and the shops will be open on Sunday — a proven dual concept of popular festival and shopping.
Detailed program and participant lists will be published in advance by the City of Dillingen and by KCM Dillingen.
