17 days of urban sports on Heiligengeistfeld: 3x3 Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Padel, Boxing Champions, and Urban Sports Week under the open sky
Since 2017, Hamburg has officially held the title of Active City – a strategic commitment by the Hanseatic city to make sports, exercise, and the Olympic spirit visible in the urban landscape. The Active City Arena is the central open-air format of this strategy: 17 days of sports under the open sky, right in the city center, freely accessible for a large part of the offerings, with world-class competitions as the sporting highlight.
In the Hamburg-Mitte district, between St. Pauli and Karolinenviertel, Heiligengeistfeld – usually the venue for the Hamburger Dom fair and major concerts – will be converted into a sports area for 17 days. A basketball court (3x3, FIBA standard), a beach volleyball court with a center stage, several padel courts, a boxing ring to Olympic standard, and an open skate area will be created on the central grounds. Around it: the Active City Village with clubs, sports federations, taster sessions, and food trucks.
The arena is divided into four clearly defined program blocks:
With the Active City Arena, Hamburg is filling a gap in the German sports calendar: Berlin has the ISTAF, Munich has the Marathon, Munich-Nymphenburg has equestrian sports – Hamburg focuses on urban open-air sports formats on Heiligengeistfeld. The premiere in 2025 proved the concept's viability; the 2026 edition is the first full program year.
With 17 days of play, the Active City Arena 2026 is the longest edition since the format's inception. The program is divided into four phases, each focusing on a different sport, but consistently accompanied by the Active City Village: taster sessions, club stands, family activities, and Olympic spirit performances.
Highlights in 2026 include the international 3x3 basketball tournament according to FIBA standard, the Active City Day on May 29 (city-wide sports club event), the boxing premiere Queen & King of the Ring with Olympic amateur and professional bouts, and the beach volleyball premium event Queen & King of the Court, which counts as part of the German Beach Tour.
