Gömnigk and Trebitz — Two Villages with a Long History

Both place names refer to Slavic roots — Gömnigk derives from the Slavic "gomon" (noise, gathering), and Trebitz from the Slavic "trebiti" (to clear land). The first documented mention of Gömnigk in 1251 — as "Gomenik" — marks the beginning of its recorded history and thus the occasion for the 775th anniversary in 2026. Trebitz is mentioned in medieval sources as a neighboring settlement and has shared its fate and identity with Gömnigk for centuries.
