Mahler's 'Resurrection Symphony' in the Konzertkirche — Festive Concert for a Double Anniversary
The concert on July 16, 2026, marks two anniversaries simultaneously: the 75th anniversary of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic and the 25th anniversary of the Konzertkirche Neubrandenburg. Both institutions significantly shape the musical landscape of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The Konzertkirche — a Gothic St. Mary's Church with a modern venue made of glass, concrete, steel, and wood — was inaugurated in 2001, designed by Finnish architect Pekka Salminen.
Two grand sacred works will be performed:
Mahler's monumental Second Symphony, with its five movements spanning from a funeral march to a grand final chorus ('Resurrect, yes, you will rise again'), is considered an ideal festive work: full of sorrow, hope, and triumphant vision. A second anniversary concert will take place the following day in the Frauenkirche Dresden.
The Neubrandenburg Philharmonic was founded in 1950 as the City Orchestra and developed over the decades into one of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern's most important ensembles. Today, it is part of the Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz (TOG) and primarily performs in the Konzertkirche Neubrandenburg.
To mark the 75th anniversary of the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic and the 25th anniversary of the Konzertkirche Neubrandenburg, a festive concert will be held on July 16, 2026, in two parts: Francis Poulenc's Concerto for Organ, Timpani, and Strings in G minor and Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, 'Resurrection'.
The performance brings together the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic, the Neubrandenburg Philharmonic Choir, the Opera Choir, and the St. Johannis Choir of Neubrandenburg under the direction of GMD Daniel Geiss. Soloists include Laura Albert (soprano), Kelley O'Connor (mezzo-soprano), and Tobias Brommann (organ).
The following day, July 17, 2026, the program will be repeated in the Frauenkirche Dresden with different choirs.
