Summer stage at Mangoldfelsen with Don Camillo, Maya the Bee, and Mountain Music
The Freilichtbühne at Mangoldfelsen is one of Bavaria's most renowned summer stages for amateur theater. Located in the heart of Donauwörth at the Mangoldfelsen rock formation, it offers seating for several hundred spectators under the open sky. The organizer is the association Freilichtbühne Donauwörth e.V. — a children's and youth theater group that has received the »Larifari« award, Bavaria's top prize for amateur theater, for its productions in 2023–2025. The 2026 summer season runs from June 20 to August 1 in the state of Bavaria, district of Donau-Ries.
The main production for 2026 is the stage adaptation of »Don Camillo und Peppone« based on the novels by Giovannino Guareschi. Directed by Ulrike Schweihofer and Maximilian Ott. The premiere is scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 8:30 PM (rain date June 21). The comedy about the Catholic priest Don Camillo and the communist mayor Peppone in a post-war North Italian village is a classic of European comedy literature — a choice that appeals to the Freilichtbühne's multi-generational audience.
In parallel to the main production, the children's and youth theater group presents »Maya the Bee« based on Waldemar Bonsels' novel. Director: Evi Thiem. Premiere on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 7:30 PM (rain date June 27 at 2 PM). The play is designed for children aged 3 and up and gives the young generation of the Donauwörth theater group the main stage. Further performances on several Sundays throughout the season.
As a special musical concert, the Bundeswehr Mountain Music Corps will perform on the Freilichtbühne on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 7 PM. The renowned military wind orchestra from Garmisch-Partenkirchen is a regular guest in Donauwörth and offers a program ranging from classical wind music, alpine folklore, and symphonic wind music. The stage is accessible for people with disabilities and equipped with an induction loop for hearing-impaired guests.
