Anniversary 700 Years of Market Rights — historical Wandeltheater by teatro blanco
In 1326, Regenstauf was granted market rights. This makes the town in the Naab valley, in the district of Regensburg, one of the oldest market towns in Bavaria. In 2026, the municipality is celebrating this 700th anniversary with various events — the Wandeltheater by teatro blanco is one of the central formats because it brings history directly into the historical townscape.
Wandeltheater is an intimate form of theater for a maximum of 35 spectators. Two actresses lead the group from station to station through Regenstauf's old town — market square, castle hill, former town wall, old alleys. At each station, they tell a different story from Regenstauf's past. Sometimes a verified episode, sometimes a legend — always based on historical research, but theatrically heightened.
The scope is broad: from the Middle Ages with the market at the crossroads, through conflagrations and plague that repeatedly struck the town, through stories of witchcraft trials and witch hunts, of local heroes and poets, up to the 20th and 21st centuries. This makes the Wandeltheater not only a historical format but also a reflection on how the place has changed over seven centuries.
The theater group teatro blanco specializes in Wandeltheater in historical locations and usually produces its plays on commission from municipalities celebrating an anniversary or a special program about their town's history. For Regenstauf, the play was developed specifically for the 700th-anniversary celebration.
Regenstauf (market town) is located about 15 km north of Regensburg in the Naab valley, shortly before its confluence with the Danube. The historical market with its town hall, castle, and medieval bridge was an important trading post between the Upper Palatinate and the Bavarian Forest since the Middle Ages. Today, the municipality has around 16,000 inhabitants.
The 2026 performance dates have been officially confirmed by the market municipality of Regenstauf. The organizer is the market municipality, and the artistic director is the theater group teatro blanco.
The group leads the performance for about 90 minutes through Regenstauf's old town, stopping at several historically significant locations — market square, castle hill, old town wall, Naab bridge. The two actresses alternate between narrative and scenic passages, sometimes with brief audience interaction.
