Tip
Anyone who wants to experience Catholic-Rhenish shooting traditions in their purest form should attend the ceremonial act: the parades of the invited brotherhoods in their historical costumes, with flags and drums, are a piece of living tradition that only exists in this form in the western Rhineland.
175 Years Schützen Birgel — An Anniversary Marked by Tradition
When the St. Johannes Schützenbruderschaft Düren-Birgel celebrates its 175th birthday on June 20, 2026, the association looks back on an uninterrupted tradition dating back to 1851. In a district with around 2,000 inhabitants, the shooting association is one of the defining institutions — and its 2026 anniversary festival is more than just a Schützenfest: it is a review, a commitment to the community, and a ceremonial act to which friendly associations from the entire Rhineland are expected.
Reception at 6:00 PM
The anniversary festival begins on Saturday, June 20, 2026, at 6:00 PM with a ceremonial reception. Programmatically, the classic elements of a Rhenish shooting anniversary can be expected:
- Welcome address by the Brudermeister (master of the brotherhood) and the board
- Ceremonial act with speeches, honors for long-standing members, and greetings from the city of Düren and friendly associations
- Parade of invited shooting clubs in traditional attire
- Spiritual address by the Präses (pastor of the St. Johannes parish)
- Festive banquet with Rhenish cuisine, shooting songs, and dancing
St. Johannes Schützenbruderschaft 1851 — The Roots
The brotherhood was founded in 1851 in the then still independent village of Birgel. It stands in the Catholic-Rhenish shooting tradition, which is anchored in the general processions and patron saint festivals of the St. Johannes parish. Like all traditional Rhenish shooting clubs, the association thrives not only on competitive shooting but also on its religious and social dimension: participation in processions, honor guards on church holidays, and support for those in need in the district.
Birgel — A District with Identity
The district of Birgel has belonged to the city of Düren since the municipal reform in 1972, but as a former village, it has retained a distinct identity. Birgel is located south of the city of Düren, on the edge of the Drover Berg, with traditional agriculture in the surrounding area. The St. Johannes parish church and the shooting association are the most important social anchors.
Düren — District Capital in Western Rhineland
The district capital Düren is located in western North Rhine-Westphalia between Aachen and Cologne, on the Rur river. With around 90,000 inhabitants, it is a regional center, an industrial location (especially paper manufacturing), and a transportation hub. Around 270,000 people live in the Düren district — many are involved in one of the numerous shooting associations that maintain Catholic-Rhenish traditions.
Significance for the Region
With 175 years of uninterrupted tradition, the Birgel brotherhood is one of the oldest of its kind in the Düren district. Comparable anniversaries are rare — they are a moment of stock-taking for Catholic-Rhenish shooting culture, which has experienced a decline in membership in recent decades, but also a remarkable revival in some places.
