Medieval Weekend in the Brothers Grimm Town – Castle, Market Square, Camp
Steinau an der Straße is one of the most significant Brothers Grimm towns in Hesse: Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm spent their childhood here. The Hessian Renaissance castle, the cobblestone old town, and the market square 'Am Kumpen' form a backdrop straight out of a fairy tale – perfect for a medieval market.
Starting Tuesday, August 18, 2026, camp groups will set up their tents on the Mauerwiese and live in medieval style for a week – including campfires, minstrels, and blacksmiths. On the weekend of August 22/23, the actual market will open in the castle courtyard and on the 'Am Kumpen' square.
The market is divided into two main areas:
In between, you can stroll through the cobblestone alleys and stop at medieval taverns.
At the two venues, you'll find jugglers, musicians with historical instruments, dancers, and fighters. Craftsmen demonstrate woodturning, blacksmithing, and leatherwork. For children, there are hand-operated chain carousels, axe throwing, archery, and face painting.
Adults pay €8, children €4. Children under sword height, people with disabilities, and press representatives have free entry. Those who come in costume often receive discounts.
The Medieval Market Steinau traditionally takes place on the 4th weekend in August and is one of Hesse's largest medieval events.
Steinau an der Straße has around 10,000 inhabitants and is located in the Main-Kinzig district on the historic 'Via Regia' road, which once connected Frankfurt with Leipzig and Krakow. Hence the nickname 'an der Straße' (on the road). The Brothers Grimm lived here from 1791 to 1796 in the so-called Amtshaus, which is now the Brothers Grimm House. Steinau Castle is one of Hesse's most important Renaissance complexes and now houses several museums.
From Tuesday, August 18, 2026, camp groups will set up their tents on the Mauerwiese and live there in medieval style until Sunday. On the weekend, the market will open in the castle courtyard and on the 'Am Kumpen' market square.
