Klein Wanzleben – Börde's Sugar Capital
Klein Wanzleben is located in the Magdeburg Börde, that fertile black earth region west of the state capital, which is considered one of the most productive agricultural landscapes in Europe. The village has belonged to the town of Wanzleben-Börde in the Börde district since 2010. Its nickname 'sugar village' dates back to a long tradition: one of the first sugar factories in Saxony-Anhalt was founded here in 1838, which produced into the 21st century and shaped village life for generations.
With the sugar factory, the need for organized fire protection also grew – and so, in 1871, a year after the founding of the German Empire, the Klein Wanzleben Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded. In 2026, this date will be commemorated for the 155th time. The brigade – now part of the Wanzleben-Börde town fire department – is using the anniversary as an occasion for a two-day festival on the weekend of June 27th to 28th.
Tanker Pulling, DJ, and Morning Pint
The program follows the classic structure of a Central German fire brigade festival. On Saturday, it begins at 5:00 PM with tanker pulling – a competition in which teams try to pull a fire engine (or similar vehicle) by hand. Afterwards, catering at the fire station and dancing with a DJ from the evening onwards. On Sunday, starting at 10:30 AM, there will be a musical morning pint with games and activities for children.
Club Anniversary in the Börde District
Fire brigade anniversaries like this are more than just club celebrations in rural Saxony-Anhalt – they are village events where the entire village life comes together. The brigade invites neighboring brigades from the Wanzleben districts, clubs, schools, and kindergartens. The anniversary thus becomes a small civic festival, supported by the volunteer work that holds the social fabric together in the Börde region, as in many East German regions.
