FF Klein Wanzleben — 155 Years of Tradition
Klein Wanzleben is a district of the unified municipality Wanzleben-Börde in the Börde district — the Bördeland is considered one of Germany's most fertile agricultural areas, with a particular focus on sugar beets. Klein Wanzleben was home to a large sugar factory for decades (founded in 1838) and is known beyond the region as the "Zuckerdorf" (sugar village). The Klein Wanzleben Volunteer Fire Brigade was founded in 1871 — one of the oldest volunteer fire brigades in the entire state of Saxony-Anhalt.
Crazy Idea for a Big Celebration
For its 155th anniversary, the FF Klein Wanzleben has come up with a fun idea for the festival: tanker pulling. A team of citizens, sports clubs, and friendly fire brigades will compete to pull a large tanker over a set distance — a test of strength and teamwork. In addition, a Gulaschkanone (field kitchen) in the Bundeswehr tradition, the regional band Plockenband, and a DJ evening program are part of the festival weekend.
Family Program on Sunday
Sunday, June 28, 2026, is Family Day. Children's firefighting drills by the youth fire brigade, demonstrations of historical firefighting equipment, sausages, cake, and coffee — the usual, but presented with the charm of a long tradition. The FF Klein Wanzleben is deeply rooted in village life: it organizes the May festival, works with the youth fire brigade to recruit new members, and is the first point of contact during major weather events in the Börde region — storms, floods, and wildfires.
Wanzleben-Börde in the Börde District
The unified municipality of Wanzleben-Börde was formed in 2010 from the merger of several villages around Wanzleben. In the Börde district, state of Saxony-Anhalt, it is one of the larger rural municipalities. Klein Wanzleben is one of the more independent districts — with its own sports club, school, and, of course, its traditional fire brigade.
