Traditional music festival of the MV Hatzenbühl with tobacco-leafing competition
The Musikverein Hatzenbühl has been organizing the Sommernachtsfest at the sports field since the 1970s. What began as a small summer festival has developed into a regionally known music festival that attracts thousands of visitors every year. The 54th edition in 2026 is a testament to exceptional volunteer commitment – the music club has been organizing the festival independently for over five decades.
Hatzenbühl is located in the historical tobacco-growing region of the Vorderpfalz. The tobacco-leafing competition, held for the 36th time in 2026, is a Palatinate specialty: Teams from several federal states compete in the traditional threading of tobacco leaves, a skill that was once part of daily life in the region. Tobacco queens from various growing regions participate in the competition, adding a picturesque touch.
The music program follows the tradition of large Palatinate music festivals: brass music concerts, Bavarian evenings with traditional costume bands, party music with dance bands, and a 'Frühschoppen' on Sunday morning. The tapping of the first keg officially opens the festival, and beer service is available throughout all three days. The festival tent can accommodate several hundred guests, and the adjacent outdoor area on the sports field complements the festival space.
The music club manages the festival catering itself, supported by other Hatzenbühl clubs. Saumagen (pork stomach stuffed with pork, bread, and spices), Bratwurst (fried sausage), Schweinshaxe (pork knuckle), Sauerkraut, fries, steaks, and desserts are on the menu. Palatinate wine, draft beer, and soft drinks accompany the culinary offerings.
The exact program for 2026 will be published by the Musikverein Hatzenbühl in the summer. The structure follows the proven key points of previous years: keg tapping and opening concert on Saturday, 'Frühschoppen' on Sunday, tobacco-leafing competition with crowning of the tobacco queens, and the festival closing on Monday evening.
