A Hundred Years of Beach Culture on Wukensee

The Strandbad Wukensee opened in 1926 and has been one of the most popular bathing spots in the southern Barnim district ever since. For over four generations, residents of Biesenthal and day-trippers from Berlin have enjoyed the fine sandy beach, the clear water, and the park-like grounds between the forest and Wukensee. On August 8, 2026, the lido will celebrate its 100th birthday with a big family festival — an anniversary that brings the entire region together.

Family Festival Right on the Water

The festival program is aimed at families and all generations. Specific program details will be announced by the organizer — the town of Biesenthal — during the summer of 2026. Expected are a stage program with regional musicians, hands-on activities for children, play stations on the beach, catering organized by local clubs, and a tribute to the 100-year history of the lido. Biesenthal and Wukensee

Biesenthal is a small town in the Barnim district — located about 25 km northeast of Berlin, on the edge of the ice-age lake landscape that characterizes the Barnim. Wukensee is one of the most beautiful lakes in the southern Barnim, a clear ice-age lake with a sandy beach that has been used as a lido for decades. In summer, the lido is a popular excursion destination — especially on weekends, the beach fills up with families from Berlin and Brandenburg. Once a year, the lake is also the venue for the Wukensee Festival with dragon boat races.

A Century of Brandenburg Beach Culture

The lidos in Brandenburg — from Berlin-Wannsee to the smaller lakes in the surrounding area — have been part of the regional DNA since the 1920s. The Strandbad Wukensee is a typical example of this tradition: created in 1926, operated by the town of Biesenthal, maintained and modernized over the decades.
