West Saxony's Grand Christmas Market
Zwickau, once the workplace of Robert Schumann and home of automotive manufacturing (Horch, Audi, Trabant), opens one of West Saxony's largest Christmas markets every Advent. From November 24 to December 22, 2026, around 100 lovingly decorated stalls will be spread across three central squares in the city center: the Hauptmarkt with the Town Hall and Gewandhaus as a backdrop, the historic Keplerstraße, and the intimate Kornmarkt. The market traditionally opens on the Tuesday before the first Advent — in 2026, that's November 24 at 12:00 PM, inaugurated by the Mayor.
Stage and Program at the Hauptmarkt
The focus is on the stage at the Hauptmarkt with a daily changing program. School and church choirs from Zwickau and the surrounding West Saxony region, brass bands, children's and youth groups, solo artists, and shows will accompany the market from 11 AM to 8 PM. On selected evenings, the market concludes with concerts in the Marienkirche and Moritzkirche — Christmas Oratorios and Bach Cantatas are part of the regular repertoire of Zwickau's church music.
Crafts, Carousels, and Children's World
The stalls offer Erzgebirge and Vogtland handicrafts — incense smokers, candle arches, pyramids, folding stars, wooden figures, and carved wood items from Seiffen and Olbernhau. Plus mulled wine in Zwickau mugs, Mutzbraten (a type of roast pork), Knüppelteig (dough twisted on a stick and roasted over an open fire), sausages, and gingerbread. For children: two carousels with historic horses, a warming fire pit for roasting Knüppelteig, and a dedicated children's creative studio with candle dipping, painting, and crafts.
Zwickau During Advent
Visitors to the market should plan half a day for the city center. Recommended sights: the Marienkirche (hall church with the Schumann organ), the Schumann House on the Hauptmarkt (the composer's birthplace), the August Horch Museum (automotive history), and Robert Schumann Square. All attractions in the old town are within walking distance of the market.
