Tip
The Franconian Kerwa thrives on its customs and brass music. Current dates and program information can be found via the Burschenschaft Dormitz or the Franconian Kirchweih calendar.
The Franconian Kerwa
The Kirchweih – called "Kerwa" or "Kärwa" in Franconia – is one of the region's most vibrant traditions. Originally the festival celebrating the consecration of the village church, the Kerwa is today a multi-day village festival with deeply rooted rituals. In Dormitz, in the district of Forchheim (state of Bavaria), the Burschenschaft Dormitz organizes the "Burschenkera" – driven by the young generation of the village.
Customs and Conviviality
The Burschenkera combines the typical elements of the Franconian Kirchweih: brass music, hearty beer, bratwurst, and the convivial gathering of the village community. The Burschenschaft – the traditional association of young, mostly unmarried men of the village – takes over the organization and ensures that the customs are passed down from generation to generation.
Several Days of Festivities
The Burschenkera usually takes place over several days around the first weekend in August. The village transforms into a festive backdrop where locals and guests from the surrounding area come together. The Kerwa is much more than a festival – it is an expression of local pride and village community.
Atmosphere
Brass music, beer tents, and exuberant spirits: The Burschenkera Dormitz stands for unadulterated Franconian Kerwa culture. Anyone who wants to experience a real Franconian Kirchweih is in the right place here – down-to-earth, tradition-conscious, and warm.
