Evening Festival of Lights in the Heart of the Schumann Festival
Zwickau, one of Saxony's largest cities and the birthplace of Robert Schumann, cherishes its musical tradition with the annual Schumann Festival. The aesthetic highlight of this festival is the Romantic Festival of Lights at the Swan Pond — a format that dates back to 1860 and has been held regularly ever since.
The Swan Pond is located in the western part of Zwickau's city center and, with its English landscape park, is a favorite stroll for many citizens. During the Festival of Lights, thousands of candles and lanterns transform the park grounds into a romantic sea of lights. The reflections on the water's surface, the historic buildings on the shore, and the musical accompaniment create an atmosphere reminiscent of Schumann's maxims.
Musicians play on the central stage in the park — from classical ensembles to solo artists, always in the spirit of Romanticism. Those who want to be active can rent a pedal or rowing boat and explore the pond in the gentle light. There are craft activities for children and numerous catering stands with finger food and picnic baskets for all visitors. The festival begins at 6 p.m. and ends around 11:30 p.m. — the late evening in the glow of lights is the actual highlight.
The Festival of Lights is part of the larger Robert Schumann Festival, which fills the city with classical concerts, readings, exhibitions, and city tours every year in June. Those attending the Festival of Lights should keep an eye on the overall calendar — the Schumann House and the Plauen-Zwickau Theater offer numerous musical program points in parallel.
Starts at 6:00 PM in Schwanenteichpark. The park lighting will be gradually lit while the first musical contributions sound on the main stage. As dusk falls, the actual light show unfolds: thousands of candles, lanterns, and strategically placed lighting make the pond and surrounding paths shine in a romantic glow.
Pedal and rowing boats are available at the boathouse; children can get creative at craft stations. Food stands offer picnic baskets, finger food, and drinks. The event ends at 11:30 PM.
The Festival of Lights is part of the Schumann Festival; further classical concert offerings of the festival week take place at the Schumann House and the Plauen-Zwickau Theater.
Zwickau is accessible via the A4 and A72 motorways. The Schwanenteichpark is centrally located, within walking distance of the main train station (approx. 15 minutes) and the city center.
