Cross-country run along the North Sea coast through dunes, sand, and mudflats
The Friesencross is a run that makes athletic use of the unique geography of the Frisian North Sea coast. The course leads through dune landscapes with their deep sand sections, across the wide sandy beaches by the sea, and finally through the mudflats – each terrain presenting its own unique challenges.
The dune passages are the most strenuous stage: loose sand, slight inclines, and the constant change between firm and yielding ground challenge muscles and coordination.
On the firm sandy areas by the sea, the pace can pick up again. Here, participants run with a view of the North Sea, often accompanied by seagulls and the typical sea breeze.
The mudflat passage is the scenic and athletic highlight: run directly on the seabed, with views of mudflats, tidal channels, and the endless expanse. Sturdy footwear and a readiness for wet legs are mandatory here.
The course runs along the edge of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. This makes the Friesencross a unique nature experience and underscores the responsibility of every participant to treat the landscape with respect.
The Friesencross is part of the large Friesenfestival on Schillig Beach (July 24-26, 2026). After the run, participants can look forward to live music, food stalls, and Frisian beach flair as a reward.
The 2026 edition leverages the connection to the Friesenfestival to attract not only running fans but also summer vacationers to Schillig Beach. Those who run in the morning can enjoy the festival stage in the afternoon and evening – a perfect double event.
The course details will be communicated by the organizer in advance, including information on tide times for the mudflat passage.
Exact course details and start time will be published before the race (tide-dependent).
