About Friesencross

The Friesencross is arguably the most scenic cross-country run along the German North Sea coast. On Saturday, July 25, 2026, embedded within the Friesenfestival, the course leads along the North Sea coast through dunes, over fine sand, and across the mudflats. Runners will experience three very different terrains in a single run, traversing the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. The Friesencross is not a classic road race but a true cross-country run that demands physical versatility and rewards participants with impressive landscapes. The organizer is Wangerland Touristik GmbH. Registration and entry fee are available via the event website. Following the run, the Friesenfestival awaits on the beach with live music and catering.

Run Through Three Worlds

The Friesencross is a run that makes athletic use of the unique geography of the Frisian North Sea coast. The course leads through dune landscapes with their deep sand sections, across the wide sandy beaches by the sea, and finally through the mudflats – each terrain presenting its own unique challenges.

Dunes

The dune passages are the most strenuous stage: loose sand, slight inclines, and the constant change between firm and yielding ground challenge muscles and coordination.

Sandy Beach

On the firm sandy areas by the sea, the pace can pick up again. Here, participants run with a view of the North Sea, often accompanied by seagulls and the typical sea breeze.

Mudflats

The mudflat passage is the scenic and athletic highlight: run directly on the seabed, with views of mudflats, tidal channels, and the endless expanse. Sturdy footwear and a readiness for wet legs are mandatory here.

UNESCO World Natural Heritage

The course runs along the edge of the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Wadden Sea. This makes the Friesencross a unique nature experience and underscores the responsibility of every participant to treat the landscape with respect.

As Part of the Friesenfestival

The Friesencross is part of the large Friesenfestival on Schillig Beach (July 24-26, 2026). After the run, participants can look forward to live music, food stalls, and Frisian beach flair as a reward.
