May 1st picnic in the Ungstein vineyards with Palatinate wines and picnic baskets among the vines
Ungstein is one of the western districts of Bad Dürkheim and a traditional Palatinate wine-growing town. The Herrenberg-Honigsäckel site is one of the most renowned sites in the Mittelhaardt region and is famous for its mineral Rieslings with special structure and aging potential. Weinwelt Herrenberg-Honigsäckel eG unites the Ungstein vintners and jointly markets the wines from this top site. The annual Winzerpicknick is one of their signature events.
The concept is simple and brilliant: Instead of classic wine festival catering at tables and benches or in a marquee, the Winzerpicknick moves the event directly into the vineyards. Guests bring their own picnic basket – bread, cheese, cold cuts, fruit, sweets according to their own taste – or purchase a picnic package on site. They spread their blankets at picnic spots in the vineyards or on the paths between the vines, unpack their baskets, and enjoy wine and food with a view of the Palatinate landscape.
At several wine stations in the vineyards, the Ungstein vintners serve their own wines: dry Rieslings with the characteristic Honigsäckel minerality, Müller-Thurgau, Weissburgunder, Grauburgunder, Spätburgunder, Rosé, and sparkling wine creations. Wine glasses can be purchased on site; with them, picnic guests wander through the vineyards and sample the offerings.
May 1st has an old tradition in Germany as a day for maypoles, spring walks, and spring festivals. In Ungstein, it becomes a wine hiking day, celebrating the first warm days of May in the still young vineyards. The vines are budding, the landscape is characterized by a delicate green, the sun warms the first stone walls – an ideal moment for a picnic among the vines.
The Winzerpicknick represents a different form of wine festival: quieter, more intimate, quality-oriented. Instead of large marquees and concert stages, nature is the stage; instead of mass catering, your own picnic basket; instead of live music, the rustling of the wind in the vines and occasional birdsong. Those seeking a conscious, sensual, and quality-oriented wine experience will find a unique format in the Winzerpicknick.
