Wines, Cocktails, and Regional Cuisine
The selection combines wines from various German growing regions — from Mosel and Rheingau to Pfalz and Baden, and Saale-Unstrut, the closest wine-growing region (only 50 km from Gera). Accompanied by cocktails, aperitifs, regional dishes, and Thuringian Bratwurst. The festival is organized by Lummersches Backhaus — a traditional Gera institution.
Gera-Untermhaus — Charm by the River
The Gera district of Untermhaus is located northwest of the city center on the White Elster river. The historic Osterstein Castle, the Hofwiesenpark as the green lung, and the districts around the Gries make Untermhaus one of Gera's most distinctive areas. The wine festival on the Gries combines the urban setting with the rural tradition of wine trading — an unusual mix that makes the festival a hidden gem in Gera's summer.
Gera — Otto Dix City in Eastern Thuringia
The independent city of Gera (around 92,000 inhabitants) in the state of Thuringia is the birthplace of the painter Otto Dix. Industrial history (textile industry, mechanical engineering), the Otto Dix heritage, a resurgent cultural scene, and its location between the Thuringian Forest and the Ore Mountains shape the city. Visitors to the wine festival should take time for a stroll through Untermhaus, including the Otto Dix birthplace.
