Three days of Freital city festival with marquee, castle courtyard, KUTA-AREA and closing fireworks — 11 to 13 September 2026
From 11 to 13 September 2026, Freital will celebrate its traditional city festival, the Windbergfest. The town in the state of Saxony, in the district of Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge, lies southwest of Dresden in the Weißeritz valley and, with around 40,000 inhabitants, is the largest town in the district. The Windbergfest is named after the Windberg, a prominent hill in the town, and has combined a Volksfest (public festival) atmosphere with Freital's town history for decades. The festival grounds extend across Burgker Straße between the town centre and the medieval Schloss Burgk.
The programme is spread across two stylistically very different areas: the large marquee in the valley, which hosts disco dancing, cover bands, and Schlager acts — and the courtyard of Schloss Burgk, where Irish folk, medieval, and steampunk music can be heard against a historic backdrop. Both areas are connected by a path, allowing you to switch between disco dancing and medieval lute music over the course of a festival evening. The KUTA-AREA of the Freital Socio-Cultural Centre additionally offers an alternative programme with indie bands, readings, and family workshops.
The festival traditionally starts on Friday evening with the Lord Mayor's beer tapping ceremony in the marquee — the traditional first tap of the beer keg officially marks the beginning. Immediately afterwards, there is an initial fireworks display over the valley as a prelude. The following two days unfold from 11 a.m. until well after midnight (disco in the marquee until 2 a.m.). Admission to the entire festival grounds is free.
Schloss Burgk, a Renaissance castle from the 16th century perched on a rocky outcrop above the Weißeritz, is Freital's older landmark and a preferred venue during the Windbergfest. On Saturday, the traditional classic car meet takes place on the castle forecourt — around 200 historic vehicles (pre-war and post-war classics, DDR Trabants and Wartburgs) gather for public viewing. In the castle courtyard, Irish folk bands and steampunk acts play on the stage; nearby, Freital's local pubs offer their own serving points.
The Friedensstadion on the edge of the festival grounds becomes an adventure mile during the Windbergfest: here, SC Freital and Freital clubs present their sports activities, children can try trampolining, climbing walls, get their faces painted, or participate in small competitions. The show children's park with clown shows, children's disco, craft activities, and games is a dedicated area for the youngest visitors. On Sunday evening, the grand closing fireworks display over the valley crowns the weekend — a spectacle visible from afar from the Windberg slope.
From 11 to 13 September 2026, Freital will celebrate its 2026 Windbergfest. The festival grounds on both sides of Burgker Straße and at Schloss Burgk will become a three-day festival mile with a marquee, castle courtyard concerts, amusement rides, an adventure mile in the Friedensstadion, and the alternative KUTA-AREA.
The traditional beer tapping ceremony by the Lord Mayor on Friday evening and the grand closing fireworks display on Sunday evening form the emotional anchors of the weekend. The classic car meet at Schloss Burgk on Saturday attracts historically interested visitors from the entire region.
Throughout all days: Bratwurst, Flammkuchen, crêpes, Freital beer, mulled wine (weather permitting), amusement rides (Ferris wheel, carousel, roller coaster).
Free admission to the festival grounds. Freital beer on tap approx. €4, Bratwurst €4, Flammkuchen €8. Amusement rides €3–€6 per ride. Parking on festival meadows is charged (day ticket approx. €5).
