Neighbourhood festival with art, cuisine, and music — volunteer-run, accessible, with an awareness team
The Wiesenviertel is a neighbourhood in Witten's city centre, located between the main train station and Witten University. For years, it has been known for its vibrant subculture, its commitment to neighbourhood culture, and its political and social activism. The Wiesenviertelfest is an expression of this identity: a neighbourhood festival organised from within the neighbourhood itself — entirely by volunteers, for non-profit purposes, and with a clearly progressive orientation.
On August 29, Markstraße will transform into the central festival mile. Stalls from Witten's creative scene will present art, design, crafts, and initiatives. Food trucks and snack stalls will serve regional and international specialities. Local bands, singer-songwriters, DJs, and performers will play on the stages. Hands-on activities for children and families will complement the offerings.
What distinguishes the Wiesenviertelfest from many commercial city festivals is its commitment to social responsibility. Accessible entrances are a matter of course, an awareness team is available for sensitive situations and ensures a discrimination-free environment. In this way, the festival sets standards that have been adopted by more and more events in recent years — Witten is a pioneer here in the Ruhr area.
The festival is funded by donations, stall fees, and an active Startnext campaign. Those who wish to support the Wiesenviertelfest can contribute to the organisation through crowdfunding — experience shows that costs often exceed revenue from stall rentals and drinks. Volunteer helpers receive two drink vouchers and a festival T-shirt per shift.
Witten is located on the southern edge of the Ruhr area, on the Ruhr river and bordering the Sauerland region. With around 95,000 inhabitants, it is a medium-sized city, characterised by the University of Witten/Herdecke and a vibrant creative and subculture scene. The Wiesenviertel is the city's most creative address — cafés, cultural venues, alternative living arrangements, social initiatives.
The festival is supported by the City of Witten, Sparkasse Witten, Stadtwerke Witten, as well as numerous citizen initiatives and associations from the Wiesenviertel. The Wiesenviertelfest team coordinates the volunteer work for stall management, stage technology, child safety, and the awareness concept.
The Wiesenviertelfest is not just entertainment. It is a political and social statement: We shape our neighbourhood ourselves, democratically, inclusively, without commercial control. In times of increasing eventisation of German city centres, this is an important counterbalance.
The Wiesenviertelfest 2026 continues its tradition as a grassroots, community-oriented neighbourhood festival. Markstraße is the festival mile, and the Wiesenviertel is the unifying element.
