Five open-air evenings on Berliner Platz — networking, live music, and cocktails in Witten's city centre
Witten is located on the southern edge of the Ruhr area, at the transition from the industrial metropolitan region to the Sauerland, with around 96,000 inhabitants. The city is characterised by a mix of classic Ruhr area industrial history (mining, steel), the renowned University of Witten/Herdecke, Germany's first private university, and an unusually green location on the Ruhr valley with Hardenstein Water Castle, Hohenstein, and Mutten-Tal as nearby destinations. The city centre around Bahnhofstraße and Berliner Platz has developed a new profile in recent years — and the After-Work series is a building block of this revitalisation.
Berliner Platz is located in the heart of Witten's city centre, directly on the pedestrian zone, with restaurants, retail, and good connections to the main train station. It is the stage for the After-Work series: temporary bars, high tables, a small stage for live acts, catering stands — an outdoor lounge that transforms typical German city square architecture into an urban summer living room.
The format differs from a classic city festival due to its day of the week and its networking focus. Thursday, 5 PM to 9 PM, is the classic "After-Work" slot: after work, before the weekend, an hour or two in a relaxed atmosphere. The event is aimed at employees, self-employed individuals, students of the University of Witten/Herdecke, and anyone who wants to meet — from chatting with acquaintances and small talk with business partners to a spontaneous Tinder date.
The five evenings of the 2026 season are spread across half the year:
Each evening from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Weather-related postponements will be announced by Stadtmarketing via Facebook and the website.
Each evening has its own musical profile — mostly regional live acts or DJ sets, complemented by cocktail stands from local restaurateurs and snack stands from city centre restaurants. The cocktail selection (Aperol Spritz, Hugo, Gin Tonic, Caipirinha) and the accessible snacks (tapas, bowls, wraps, bratwurst) make the event a cocktail bar in a city format.
Behind the series are Stadtmarketing Witten GmbH, a professional city centre operator, and Standortgemeinschaft Witten-Mitte e.V., an association of city centre businesspeople. The format is supported by Stadtwerke Witten GmbH. This integrates it into a systematic revitalisation strategy for Witten's city centre — alongside the Christmas market, the city festival, and other formats.
Anyone visiting Witten should explore beyond Berliner Platz: Hardenstein Water Castle in the Ruhr valley, the Hohenstein with its observation tower, the Muttental Mining Trail, the cradle of Ruhr mining, the Märkisches Museum, and Kemnader See (to the south) for water sports. Witten is also a good starting point for day trips to Bochum, Dortmund, or the Sauerland.
Established city centre revitalisation series with a clear networking character. 5 evenings spread throughout the summer, each with its own musical profile.
