Low German influenced Advent market at the historic scales in Leer's Old Town
The historic scales are one of Leer's most famous landmarks. Directly behind them, on the Waage square, the Wiehnachtsmarkt achter d' Waag has established itself as a smaller, atmospheric Advent market. Unlike the city's large Christmas market, it takes place exclusively on the four Advent Sundays and is concentrated into a few hours in the afternoon. This very concentration gives the market its special character: familiar, influenced by Low German, and strongly driven by the commitment of Schipper Klottje.
On the square, visitors will find around twenty-three stalls with arts and crafts, regional specialties, and winter gastronomy. Mulled wine, punch, and East Frisian specialties are just as much a part of it as small gifts made of wood, ceramics, and textiles. On a small stage, Low German readings, songs, choirs, and musical contributions alternate.
Schipper Klottje Leer e.V. presents this market as the centerpiece of its association's work. The association preserves the Low German language through theater, songs, and customs. Every year, the Wiehnachtsmarkt achter d' Waag offers them a forum where Low German is not only spoken but also sung, laughed, and experienced together.
For many residents of Leer, an Advent Sunday in the Old Town is unthinkable without a visit to 'achter d' Waag'. Together with the Christmas market on the main streets, it creates a multi-layered, regionally anchored Advent experience in southern East Frisia.
On each of the four Advent Sundays, the Waage square in Leer's Old Town fills with market stalls, light installations, and music. Schipper Klottje, as the organizer, provides a stage program that focuses on Low German: songs, short texts, sketches, and pre-Christmas contributions from East Frisian choirs and groups.
Around the stage, the gastronomic area invites visitors to linger with mulled wine, punch, and winter specialties. The historic backdrop of the scales and the short, intense market duration contribute to the charm of this Advent market.
On each of the four Advent Sundays, the following structure, communicated by Schipper Klottje, applies:
