5th Edition – International Soloists, Duos, and Ensembles in Wetzlar's Old Town
The Wetzlar Street Music Festival has established itself as a fixture in the Hessian festival calendar within a few years. 2026 marks the 5th edition – on May 2 and 3. For two days, the medieval old town around Wetzlar Cathedral transforms into an open concert stage: solo artists, duos, and ensembles from Germany and Europe perform at 10 designated locations, and the audience wanders from performance to performance.
The kick-off on Saturday, May 2, 2026, is the Youth Band Contest: Young bands from the region compete starting at 12 PM at Schillerplatz. A jury selects the winners, who receive prize money and performance slots at the main festival on Sunday.
On Sunday, May 3, 2026, the actual festival runs from 12 PM. Starting from Domplatz, the acts spread across 10 locations in the historic old town – squares, alleys, courtyards. The concept is classic: short performances (15–30 minutes), wandering instead of sitting, collection boxes are permitted. The acts are curated in advance and come from Germany and neighboring countries.
A special feature of the Wetzlar festival: The audience votes online for their favorite acts. The winners of the audience award receive prize money, performance slots at other festivals, or further engagements. The voting process runs during the festival and until shortly after.
Another peculiarity: The festival is not exclusively musical. A THW presentation (Technical Relief Agency) showcases emergency vehicles and exercises, and the 'Street of Science' opens scientific institutions and universities to the public – a crossover that makes the festival family-friendly and profiles it beyond just music.
Wetzlar is located in Central Hesse on the Lahn River and is known for literature (Goethe's 'The Sorrows of Young Werther' is set here), industry (Leica cameras are produced in Wetzlar), and its religious significance (Wetzlar Cathedral, one of Germany's most unusual hall churches, half Romanesque, half Gothic). The old town, with its dense half-timbered houses, is perfect for a street music festival.
Organizers: Stadt-Marketing Wetzlar e.V. in cooperation with BBP (Bernd Butz Promotion). The full program with acts and schedule will be published on bbp-wetzlar.de and the city's website.
The exact schedule and acts will be published on the festival website before the event.
