The Altmark in Autumn Attire

In the state of Saxony-Anhalt, within the Salzwedel district of Altmark, lies the small town of Klötze — nestled in the vast, gently rolling landscape of the western Altmark, between the heathlands and oak forests that characterise this region. Klötze calls itself "connected to nature, vibrant, rooted in homeland", and once a year, the town proves it with a Volksfest (traditional folk festival) that draws the entire Altmark: the Martinimarkt.

What the Market Offers

For five days around St. Martin's Day, the centre of Klötze transforms into a classic folk festival: rides for all ages (carousel, Ferris wheel, dodgems, chain carousel), market stalls selling clothing, jewellery, toys, and household goods, plus food stands offering bratwurst, shashlik, mulled wine, and sweet treats. The opening is traditionally on Thursday, the fireworks display on Friday evening is a highlight for many visitors, and the family day on Monday with reduced-price rides attracts parents from all over the Altmark.

Tradition and Significance

The Martinimarkt is a must-attend event in the Altmark calendar. Over the five days, the town welcomes tens of thousands of visitors from the Altmarkkreis Salzwedel, Stendal, the Wendland region, and the surrounding areas of Wolfsburg.
