Wetzlar — Cathedral City in Advent

The central Hessian Cathedral City of Wetzlar is one of Hesse's most atmospheric Advent stages: narrow half-timbered alleys, the imposing Wetzlarer Dom, Goethe squares, and the Lahn river as a quiet axis through the city. This is precisely the backdrop used by Weihnachtsflair Wetzlar, organized by Stadt-Marketing Wetzlar e.V. It is not an anonymous market, but a deliberately bipartite concept of a classic Christmas market and a historic Advent village.

Two Locations, Two Moods

Domplatz: The classic Christmas market at the foot of Wetzlar Cathedral — mulled wine stands, bratwurst stalls, wooden huts with gift items, live stage. It's crowded, lively, urban here.

Schillerplatz: The historic Advent village under the famous large chestnut tree. Here, the organizers focus on craftsmanship, smaller stalls, and a sophisticated lighting design with thousands of lights and Herrnhuter stars. It's quieter, more contemplative here, somewhere between an Advent market and a fairytale setting.

Program and Schedule

Live music is regularly featured — a classic of the market is Thursday evening with a concert program (brass choirs, big bands, singers). On the four Advent Sundays, there is a family program: storytelling, hands-on activities, St. Nicholas. A children's carousel complements the offerings. The market is closed on Christmas Eve, then reopens in the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve.

One of the Longest Market Durations in Hesse

With its duration from November 26 to December 28, Weihnachtsflair is among the Hessian markets with particularly long opening hours. For those who prefer it quiet: between Christmas and New Year's Eve — Wetzlar is mild then, very relaxed, and the market is significantly less crowded than on Advent Saturdays.

Wetzlar as a Day Trip

Those coming from Frankfurt, Marburg, or Giessen can ideally combine a market visit with a short city tour: Cathedral, Domplatz, Schillerplatz, the Goethe House, the Eisenmarkt — all close together. Wetzlar is a pedestrian city par excellence.
