Three days of Rheinhessen wine under the large chestnut tree at Schillerplatz
Schillerplatz is one of Wetzlar's most beautiful small squares. An old, mighty chestnut tree provides shade here during the warmest weeks of high summer — and it is precisely under its canopy that Stadt-Marketing Wetzlar e.V. sets up its Sommernachtsweinfest every year at the end of July. In 2026, it will be the 22nd edition.
Wetzlar itself is not located in a wine-growing region. That's precisely the charm of the festival: Five Rheinhessen vintners travel from the southern growing region between Mainz, Worms, and Bingen to present their white, rosé, and red wines. In addition, there are stands from Wetzlar's twin towns — Colchester (Great Britain), Avignon (France), and Siena (Italy) — each offering wines from their respective regions and small specialties.
The wines are accompanied by regional dishes, cheeses, snacks, and afternoon coffee. Those who only know Schillerplatz during the week for coffee will now experience it as Wetzlar's high-summer living room.
As with many Central Hesse wine festivals, there is a dedicated festival glass with the Sommernachtsweinfest logo. It costs a few euros as a deposit, can be refilled at any stand, and can be taken home as a souvenir at the end.
The Goethe town of Wetzlar in the Lahn-Dill district is a half-timbered town with an impressive cathedral, a picturesque old town by the river, and a great Goethe tradition (keyword: "The Sorrows of Young Werther"). Anyone who wants to combine wine, a summer evening, and a city backdrop with real historical flair will find it here.
Stadt-Marketing Wetzlar e.V. has been organizing the festival independently for over two decades. The usual setup: opening on Friday evening, main event on Saturday and Sunday with live music on the Schillerplatz stage, and a program for young and old.
Detailed program will be published shortly before the festival on wetzlar.de and in the local press.
