City festival and bridge run around the Lahn bridges
The Brückenfest Wetzlar is a hybrid event concept that combines two worlds: an ambitious Volksfest (public festival) with a competitive character and a classic city festival with catering, live music, and a family program. This dual nature distinguishes the festival from purely gastronomic city festivals and gives it an independent character in the Central Hessian event calendar.
The Wetzlarer Brückenlauf will take place for the 25th time in 2026. Since 2001, it has grown into one of the largest grassroots sports events in Central Hesse. The special feature: Unlike a classic fun run, the Brückenlauf is a relay competition. Teams of three runners each form a relay that alternately races across the historic Lahn bridges in Wetzlar's old town. This format choice makes the run attractive for clubs, companies, schools, and authorities – the team element encourages participation beyond pure hobby runners.
The Lahn bridges are the urban landmark of Wetzlar. The Alte Lahnbrücke (also Lahnbrücke) is one of the oldest bridges in the Hessian region, in its current form dating from the 14th century. It connects the old town on the right bank of the Lahn with the new town on the left bank. During the Brückenlauf, these historic structures become part of the racecourse – a setting that is rare in Germany.
Parallel to the Brückenlauf, the city festival runs for three days. Bands from the region play on several stages in the old town, food trucks and club stands provide catering, and on Sunday there is a Sunday shopping event with promotions by downtown retailers. This creates a weekend program for residents and visitors that combines sports, entertainment, and a city stroll.
Wetzlar holds a special place in German cultural history: In 1772, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe fell in love with Charlotte Buff here, which led to "The Sorrows of Young Werther." Today, the city is also an industrial center for optics and precision mechanics – Leica and other well-known brands are based here. This combination of cultural history and high-tech industry gives Wetzlar a special character, which is also reflected in the Brückenfest: civic, sporty, culturally aware.
