Mining and Family Festival on May 1st at the Knesebeckschacht Mining Museum in Bad Grund
The Schachtfest Bad Grund takes place on the grounds of the Knesebeckschacht Mining Museum, one of the most significant industrial monuments of mining history in the Western Harz. For centuries, Bad Grund was one of the most important mining towns in the Harz region – ore extraction on the Iberg and in the surrounding valleys dates back to the Middle Ages. The Knesebeckschacht itself was in operation until the 1990s and was preserved as a museum site after its closure.
The Schachtfest traditionally opens with a mountain festival service in the historic machine hall. The monumental industrial architecture provides an exceptionally atmospheric setting for the devotion, which stands in the tradition of the region's miners and refers to the common heritage of mining.
After the service, the museum opens its doors. Guided tours explore the history of the Knesebeckschacht and the Grund ore mine, the technology of the historic hoisting machine is demonstrated, and club members explain tools, working conditions, and the social world of the miners. Hands-on activities related to mining are offered for children.
On the festival grounds, club stands provide catering with hot meals, beer, and non-alcoholic beverages. A miners' band or a regional music group accompanies the festival musically. This makes the Schachtfest a family outing with a cultural-historical claim and a communal, festive character.
The Schachtfest 2026 follows the established format: service, museum opening with tours, catering, and music program. Against the backdrop of the Bergfreiheit anniversary, the festival receives special attention and is organized by the museum association together with Harzklub groups and local clubs.
