Art, Culture, and Flea Market Festival at Bürgerbahnhof Plagwitz
Plagwitz, once an industrial district in Leipzig's west, is now one of the city's most vibrant neighborhoods — characterized by students, young families, artists, and an active creative scene. Bürgerbahnhof Plagwitz, a community initiative on the grounds of a former train station, has become a central meeting point. This is where the Westbesuch Festival takes place.
Unlike commercial neighborhood festivals, Westbesuch consistently combines market character and cultural programming. Flea market stalls with bric-a-brac, designer pieces, vintage fashion, and handmade jewelry line up on the lawns of Bürgerbahnhof — alongside them, "Culture Islands" emerge: studios with live demonstrations, hands-on workshops, small stages for readings and theater, open-air exhibitions.
The music program ranges from acoustic solo sets to small bands — deliberately kept at a low volume to preserve the atmosphere of a neighborhood picnic. Workshops and discussion forums complement the artistic character: from printmaking workshop introductions and repair cafés to discussions about neighborhood politics. The festival explicitly sees itself not as a consumer event, but as a place for encounters.
The organizer is Westbesuch e.V., which hosts the festival on a voluntary basis and without profit motive. The goal is to revitalize the former industrial district of Plagwitz through art and culture and to support creative freelancers and newcomer artists. Stall registration via the website (westbesuch.com), artist and food truck applications via [email protected].
On both dates, the festival runs from 10 AM to 6 PM on the grounds of Bürgerbahnhof Plagwitz. The exact list of stalls and programs will be published a few weeks before each date on westbesuch.com.
The second date, July 18th, is coordinated with the Co-Up Festival — a neighboring format focusing on co-working and open-source culture. Visitors attending both festivals on the same day will experience a complete Leipzig West day in Plagwitz style.
On July 18th, program points of the Co-Up Festival will run in parallel — both festivals will partially share the grounds and combine their programs.
