Galliviehmarkt

The Galliviehmarkt is more than an agricultural event. It is the original root of today's Gallimarkt and thus a living piece of history. While the Gallimarkt has developed into a huge folk festival over the centuries, the Galliviehmarkt preserves the original character of a farmers' and trade market.

Origin of the Gallimarkt

The Gallimarkt was first documented in 1508 and was originally primarily a livestock and general goods market. Farmers from all over East Frisia and beyond brought their livestock to Leer to do business. This function as a regional trading center has shaped Leer for centuries. The Galliviehmarkt preserves this tradition to this day.

VoSt-Gelände as Market Location

The venue is the VoSt-Gelände in Leer, a traditional marketplace for agricultural events. The infrastructure is designed to meet the needs of a livestock market, facilitating the delivery, inspection, and sale of animals.

Delivery on Tuesday

On Tuesday, October 13th, 2026, animal delivery begins at 3:00 PM. Farmers from the region and commercial traders bring their cattle, horses, and other livestock to the market. The animals are inspected, housed in pens, and prepared for the market the next day.

Main Market on Wednesday

On Wednesday, October 14th, 2026, the actual market day begins at 6:00 AM. Early risers inspect the animals, negotiate prices, and close deals. These early hours at the livestock market have a very special charm—the atmosphere is focused, factual, and tradition-conscious.

Bridge to the Gallimarkt

Since the Galliviehmarkt takes place immediately before the Gallimarkt and partly coincides with its opening day, visitors have the opportunity to experience both events in combination. The transition from the traditional livestock market to the modern folk festival makes this complex of events unique.
