Come with children and allow some time: The neighborhood festival is not loud and overwhelming, but deliberately family-friendly. If you're looking for a glimpse into the "real" Kassel beyond the documenta city, this is the place to be.
Neighborhood Festival in Wesertor
Kassel's Wesertor district, north of the city center, has been characterized by a colorful, multicultural population for decades. The annual Wesertor Neighborhood Festival is the central community-building event in the calendar: families, clubs, schools, church communities, and youth centers meet here for an afternoon full of games, music, and exchange.
Two Locations – One Festival
The festival extends over the Finkenherd green space at the corner of Katzensprung and the nearby Children's and Youth Farm. On the Finkenherd grounds, there is a bouncy castle, basketball court, participatory circus, and movement activities for all ages. At the farm, you'll find bright red tractor rides, crate climbing, mobile play activities, and creative workshops at the Haus am Werr.
Initiative from the Neighborhood
A broad alliance of stakeholders is behind the festival: the Wesertor Neighborhood Office, the neighborhood management from the federal-state program "Social Cohesion," schools, youth facilities, church communities, and committed residents are organizing the festival together.
Diversity as the Program
The neighborhood festival explicitly sees itself as a meeting place: between generations, cultures, and ways of life. This attitude is reflected in the offerings – from migrant associations to senior meeting points, everyone is included here. Free admission.
About the Neighborhood
Wesertor is located directly on the Fulda River, north of Kassel's city center, and is easily accessible on foot or by tram. With around 5,000 inhabitants and a high proportion of young families, it is one of the liveliest districts in the city.
Neighborhood with History
Historically, Wesertor was characterized by working-class families, railway workers, and the shipyard industry on the Fulda. Today, people from over 60 nations, students, and long-time Kassel residents live side by side. The neighborhood festival reflects this diversity and acts as a community-building format. Programs like "Social Cohesion" make it financially possible for the festival to run annually free of charge for all residents.
