Family funfair and medieval market in Kassel city centre
The Casseler Frühlings-Freyheit is the traditional spring festival in Kassel's city centre. For four days, the central squares – Königsplatz, Opernplatz, and Friedrichsplatz – transform into a connected festival area. With the spelling "Freyheit", the city marketing department harks back to the historical designation of medieval market rights that the city once received from its territorial lords.
On Königsplatz and Opernplatz, there are carousels, children's rides, and stalls selling flowers and spring decorations. On the Friedrichsplatz – Kassel's neoclassical main square in front of the Fridericianum – traders set up a historical market: medieval crafts, costumed performers, music groups, stilt walkers, and stalls with handmade products and medieval food. On weekends, the "mit Herz" flea market also takes place on Wilhelmsstraße near the town hall.
On Sunday, April 12, 2026, Kassel's shops will open their doors for a Sunday shopping event from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.. The festival thus combines the atmosphere of a folk festival with the revitalisation of the city centre – a concept with which many large Hessian cities boost their city centres twice a year (spring and autumn).
Kassel is internationally known as a documenta city – in April, before the start of the tourist season, the city has a special charm. The Frühlings-Freyheit is the first major city festival of Kassel's event year and the kick-off for the open-air season. With over 4 squares and hundreds of stalls and showmen, it attracts visitors from North Hesse and the surrounding region.
The Casseler Frühlings-Freyheit is a comparatively young format and thematically picks up on the historical term "Freyheit" – medieval market rights. It is, in a way, the spring sibling of the Casseler Herbst-Freyheit, which takes place at the end of October on the same squares. Together, both dates frame the open-air year in Kassel's city centre.
