Hesse's most popular Christmas market — Motto 2026: „The Valiant Little Tailor — Seven at One Blow!“
Kassel is the city of the Brothers Grimm: the Brothers Grimm lived and worked here, collected their fairy tales here, and the Grimmwelt Museum is located here. The Fairy Tale Christmas Market takes this tradition seriously, making it the program line for one of Germany's largest Christmas markets — organized by Kassel Marketing GmbH, with a new fairy tale motto each year.
In 2026, the market is themed around „Seven at One Blow!“ — dedicated to the fairy tale of The Valiant Little Tailor, that Grimm tale about wit, courage, and the great art of making something big out of something small. The entire market will be decorated with motifs from the tailor's story: at Königsplatz, in the stalls, and in the lighting choreography.
The setting is the entire Kassel city center between Königsplatz (main stage, world's largest fairy tale pyramid, Ferris wheel), Friedrichsplatz (fairy tale forest), Opernplatz, and Florentiner Platz (Grimm fairy tale village, Advent calendar building). Connecting these squares is the Treppenstraße — Germany's first purely pedestrian street — featuring a real slide as a popular family attraction.
The market's landmark is the world's largest fairy tale pyramid at Königsplatz — a rotating, multi-story wooden pyramid with illuminated fairy tale figures, unique in its height and mechanics. Added to this is the Advent calendar building: each day of Advent, a „window“ opens on the building, revealing a new fairy tale motif.
Throughout the market, the air is filled with the scent of mulled wine, roasted almonds, and gingerbread. Decorated stalls sell gifts, jewelry, candles, wood crafts, and toys. The food ranges from bratwurst and potato pancakes to local Hessian specialties. Live entertainment on the main stage includes choirs, bands, and children's programs.
The market opens on the Sunday before the 1st Advent (November 23, 2026) and runs until December 30, 2026 — extending beyond the entire Christmas period. The market is closed on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day (December 24–26), but reopens afterward and becomes particularly lively in the days between Christmas and New Year's Eve.
