Pride demonstration and cultural festival of the queer community in North Hesse
The Christopher Street Day (CSD) Kassel is the largest and most visible event for the queer community in North Hesse. As a political demonstration as well as a cultural festival, it mobilizes thousands of participants every year from Kassel, the Werra-Meißner district, Schwalm-Eder, Göttingen, and northern Hesse. Unlike commercialized big-city Prides, the CSD Kassel clearly retains its demonstrative character — visibility for LGBTQIA+ rights and against discrimination.
The spatial concept has been stable for years: The opening rally takes place on Friedrichsplatz in front of the Fridericianum — a square known worldwide for the documenta and a symbol of open, pluralistic urban culture. From there, the colorful demonstration march starts through the city center with speeches, chants, and music. The endpoint is the Färberei at Universitätsplatz, where the stage program, information booths, and parties conclude the day.
The organization is backed by the Queeres Zentrum Kassel (Queer Center Kassel), a non-profit association that serves as a contact point for the LGBTQIA+ community year-round. The center explicitly sees itself as a low-threshold and discrimination-free point of contact for new arrivals, people coming out, and multiply marginalized groups. Planning meetings for the annual CSD take place throughout the year at the Studihaus (Universitätsplatz 10).
The program follows a proven pattern: Rally at midday, demonstration march in the afternoon, stage program from late afternoon to evening with drag shows, DJ sets, and live acts, followed by an after-show party from 8 PM (ages 18+). Slogans in past years: 2025 "Queer joy is an act of rebellion – Queere Freude ist ein Akt des Widerstands".
Christopher Street Days worldwide commemorate the Stonewall Uprising on June 28, 1969, on Christopher Street in New York. The first CSDs in Germany were organized in 1979, just under a decade after Stonewall. The term "CSD" is primarily used in Germany and Switzerland (elsewhere: Pride). Kassel joins a dense Hessian CSD season, with neighboring events in Fritzlar (June 6), Witzenhausen (May 30), and Eschwege (August 15).
The 2026 edition will be organized by the Queeres Zentrum Kassel and volunteer helpers. The motto and the exact daily program will be communicated via csdkassel.wordpress.com and Instagram @csdkassel. Planning meetings take place at the Studihaus.
Demonstration and open-air are free. After-show party may have a moderate admission fee.
