Wine hike on Katzenberg and Kirchberg with tasting stations and brass band concert at Rathausplatz
The Weingartner Weinwandertag is one of the most charming Baden wine events marking the transition from summer to autumn. Annually on the first Sunday in September (2026 = September 6), the municipality of Weingarten (Baden) opens its vineyards on Katzenberg and Kirchberg for an open wine hike. The organizer is the Musikverein Weingarten (Baden) e.V. — which simultaneously organizes and finances the most important club activity of the year with this event.
The wine hike covers 4 to 6 km through the vineyards on Katzenberg and Kirchberg — gentle ups and downs of the Baden Kraichgau vineyards. Along the route, several tasting stands are set up: local vintners from Weingarten and the surrounding Kraichgau region (Bauerhaus Weingarten, Weingut Bossert, Weingut Lay, among others) offer their wines for tasting. Classic Weingarten varietals: Müller-Thurgau, Riesling, Lemberger, Spätburgunder. Four different hiking trails are offered by the music club — GPX and Komoot files are available for free download. There is no fixed start time; hikers can decide when to start (typically between 10 AM and 2 PM).
While the hikers are out in the vineyards, the Musikverein Weingarten (Baden) plays an all-day brass music concert at Rathausplatz. The hike also ends here — many hikers conclude the day with a refreshment stop at Rathausplatz. The music club alternates annually between two program formats:
2026 is the year of the Hitparade — a popular format with a lively atmosphere.
Weingarten (Baden) (approx. 10,500 inhabitants, Karlsruhe district, AGS 08215) is not to be confused with Weingarten in Upper Swabia. The Baden Weingarten is located in the western Kraichgau, about 15 km northeast of Karlsruhe. The village is part of the Badische Weinstraße (Baden Wine Route) and is one of the northernmost wine-growing locations in Baden. The vineyards on Katzenberg and Kirchberg are among the most beautiful panoramic viewpoints in the Kraichgau hills — with good visibility, the view extends to the Palatinate.
The 2026 edition falls on the first Sunday in September — the traditional choice of the Weingarten music club members. The weekend also serves as the music club's most important revenue event, coordinating all logistics: trail marking, wine tasting stations, catering at Rathausplatz, and the music program.
The year 2026 is a Hitparade year — a cover format with current pop and Schlager hits, which traditionally attracts a mixed audience (hikers with champagne glasses and families with children).
Free admission to the hike and the Musikverein concert. Wine at tasting stations at tasting prices (typically €1–3 per glass). Food and wine at Rathausplatz at market prices. Proceeds go to the Musikverein Weingarten.
Train: Weingarten (Baden) station (Karlsruhe–Bruchsal line), 10 minutes' walk to Rathausplatz.
Car: A5 exit Karlsruhe-Nord, then L562. Parking around the town center.
Free admission to the hike and the concert. Wine, food, and tasting cups at club and vintner prices.
Come early — the tasting stands are open from late morning to early evening; it can get crowded at peak times (lunch/afternoon). Four routes offer a choice between short family tours and longer hiking experiences.
