About Grötzinger Weinmarkt
Grötzinger Weinmarkt — edition 2026
On Thursday, May 14, 2026 – Ascension Day and traditional Father's Day in Baden – the Hottscheck Narrenzunft transforms the town hall square in Karlsruhe's Grötzingen district into a convivial wine market from 11 AM. In the guild kitchen, steaks and roast sizzle on the charcoal grill, accompanied by Maultaschen, freshly tapped beer, and carefully selected wines from the Baden region. In the afternoon, the guild offers coffee, homemade cakes, and waffles. The Hexenjugend organizes face painting and games for the youngest guests. Musical accompaniment is provided by the Hottscheck-Hexen, Feurige Männer, and Noten-Chaoten – the guild's Carnival figures, who also appear here in costume during the summer. Bus line 21 will be rerouted due to the event.

Tip
Plan a walk through the historic village center of Grötzingen – the "Painter Village" is one of Karlsruhe's most distinctive districts.
Wine Market in the Painter Village Grötzingen
The Grötzinger Weinmarkt is one of the most charming district festivals in Karlsruhe (Karlsruhe district, state of Baden-Württemberg). The venue is the central Rathausplatz (town hall square) in the Grötzingen district – that eastern Karlsruhe suburb known as the "Malerdorf" (Painter Village) due to its former artists' colony in the late 19th century. Painters like Friedrich Kallmorgen and Otto Fikentscher shaped the Grötzinger artists' colony here, making the village a refuge for plein-air realism.
Organizer: the Hottscheck Narrenzunft
The Weinmarkt is organized by the Hottscheck Narrenzunft Grötzingen – one of the most traditional Carnival associations in the Karlsruhe city area. What many don't know: the Hottscheck figures also perform in the summer. For the wine market, Hottscheck-Hexen, Feurige Männer, and Noten-Chaoten serve guests in the traditional costumes and masks of their figures – an unusual sight and a successful bridge between Carnival culture and summer conviviality.
Culinary Delights from the Guild Kitchen
The Hottscheck guild kitchen and wine cellar serve a true Swabian-Baden selection:
- Steaks from the charcoal grill
- Roast according to an old family recipe
- Maultaschen with broth or pan-fried
- Freshly tapped draft beer
- Carefully selected regional wines (Baden)
- Coffee and homemade cake in the afternoon
- Waffles and sweet treats
- Non-alcoholic options
Program for Children
The Hexenjugend – the youth branch of the Hottscheck Narrenzunft – organizes face painting and games for the youngest visitors. This turns the wine market into a family event: while parents sample wine, the children are entertained and supervised.
Music Throughout the Festival Grounds
Various Hottscheck figures provide musical accompaniment to the festival:
- Hottscheck Hexen with shawms and drums
- Feurige Männer with horns
- Noten-Chaoten with cheerful brass music
Grötzingen — Karlsruhe District with Village Character
Despite being incorporated into Karlsruhe in 1974, Grötzingen has retained its village character. Half-timbered houses, the historic town hall square, the Pfinz river, and the old mill characterize the village center. With tram line S5, the district is well connected to Karlsruhe city center, making the wine market a popular destination for locals and visitors from the region.
