Karlsruhe's largest district festival — over 100,000 visitors in the historic Durlach Old Town
The Durlach Old Town Festival has been Karlsruhe's largest district festival for almost half a century — and one of the largest in Southern Germany. The 48th edition in 2026 takes place on Friday, July 3rd, and Saturday, July 4th, 2026. The organizer is the Durlach District Office, under the auspices of the City of Karlsruhe. The festival started in 1977 with the opening of the Durlach pedestrian zone and has since developed into a firm highlight in the Karlsruhe event calendar — over 100,000 visitors came in 2025 over the two festival days to the historic district.
The festival opens on Friday at 5:00 PM with the traditional barrel tapping in front of Durlach Town Hall — usually by the Mayor of Karlsruhe together with the Durlach local administration. The start of the festival is always a well-attended spectacle with the first live music and the first bratwurst aroma in the alleys.
Over 13 stages are spread across the squares and alleys of the Durlach Old Town — from Rathausplatz to Saumarkt, from Schlossplatz to Pfinztalstraße. Around 40 bands and DJ acts provide an extremely diverse program: Rock, Pop, Cover classics, regional newcomers, Schlager, Folk, Country, Jazz, Funk. The Open Stage, as its own stage, has been a meeting place for young talents from Karlsruhe and the region for years — a Karlsruhe newcomer promotion program in a festival format.
What distinguishes Durlach from other district festivals is the historic backdrop: The Durlach Old Town with its narrow alleys, half-timbered houses, the palace, the Saumarkt, the Town Hall, and the remnants of the city wall is one of the oldest preserved old towns in the region. This backdrop turns every festival evening into an atmospheric experience. Pfinztalstraße, the main street of the old town, transforms into a continuous festival mile.
The festival is family-friendly — during the day, families dominate, and in the evening, the Karlsruhe adult crowd. Various food stalls offer regional Swabian-Baden specialties, bratwurst, fries, crêpes, vegetarian and vegan options, international cuisine. Draft beer, Baden wines, cocktails — the selection is one of the widest in the region.
Durlach (incorporated in 1938, around 30,000 inhabitants) is Karlsruhe's oldest and most traditional district — a former Margravial residence with its own history. From Karlsruhe Central Station, you can reach Durlach in 5 minutes by tram (lines S 1, S 2, S 4 — stop Durlach Bahnhof or Marktplatz). The festival affects public transport: Trams are rerouted, bus replacements are set up — the VBK (Karlsruhe Transport Authority) adapts to the festival.
On July 3rd and 4th, 2026, the Durlach Old Town will once again transform into Karlsruhe's largest district festival. Over 13 stages along Pfinztalstraße, at Rathausplatz, Saumarkt, and other historic squares will provide live music from all genres with around 40 bands and DJ acts.
