Over 25 years of Weindorf on Sandböhl – Rheinhessen wines, live music, and sparkling wine under the open sky
Groß-Gerau deliberately calls its traditional August festival a Weindorf – not a Weinfest. The difference is programmatic: instead of a compact beer tent, a temporary village of pavilions, stalls, and arbors is created on the Sandböhl, showcasing the wine world of Rheinhessen and Rheingau over several days. Weingut Gehring, which has shaped the Weindorf for over 25 years, is leading the way – complemented by other winemakers from the region.
The Sandböhl is a traditional square on the edge of Groß-Gerau's city center, offering the perfect setting with old trees, gravel paths, and seating areas. On balmy summer evenings, the square fills with guests from the entire Groß-Gerau district and the southern Rhine-Main area.
In the glass, you'll find wines from Rheinhessen and the Roter Hang region: Rieslings, Silvaners, Burgunders, Spätburgunders, sparkling wine, and 'Schorlen'. The atmosphere is open and accessible – not a standing-room-only lounge concept, but long wooden tables where people get to know each other.
Every evening, a band performs on the Volksbank stage. The program ranges from cover band pop and Schlager to dance and party music – without losing the focus on wine. Regular guests come for the wine but stay for the music.
The organizer is the Gewerbeverein Groß-Gerau 1865 e. V., the local association of traders and businesses – one of the oldest in Hesse. The Weindorf is an important date in the association's calendar and a contribution to the city's culture. The event is supported by the Groß-Gerau Volksbank.
