Wine and Fire – An Archetypal Pair

Since antiquity, wine and fire have been inextricably linked: fire during shared meals, wine during symposia, the Mediterranean way of life that brings together warmth, light, and communal drinking. The concept of Wein und Flamme embraces this archaic connection and transfers it to the Rhenish-Hessian context: Saulheim wines, crackling fire pits in the winery's courtyard, Flammkuchen from the wood-fired oven, and the early summer evening atmosphere merge into a sensual experience.

Weingut Kösterhof as Host

Weingut Kösterhof in Saulheim hosts the event. With its traditional courtyard architecture, spacious inner courtyard, and relaxed atmosphere, it offers the perfect setting for an intimate summer wine event. Fire pits will be set up in the courtyard, not only creating atmosphere but also serving for cooking the Flammkuchen. Rhenish-Hessian wineries have undergone remarkable quality development in recent years and are now among the interesting addresses in the region.

Flammkuchen from the Wood-Fired Oven

Flammkuchen is the culinary constant of the evening. Crispy thin dough, topped with crème fraîche, bacon, and onions (classic), but also in vegetarian or sweet variations, is cooked in the wood-fired oven or over the fire pits. Fresh from the fire to the table, paired with a glass of Saulheim Riesling or Weißburgunder – a culinary combination that has tradition in both Alsace and Rhenish Hesse.

The date at the end of May is wisely chosen: the evenings are warm enough for outdoors, the sun sets late, and the atmosphere between day and night is particularly atmospheric. As dusk falls, the fire pits take over the lighting, and the crackling of the wood fires combines with conversation, wine, and Flammkuchen to create a timeless summer evening.
