For a glass with Goethe – the wine festival on Frauenplan
The Weimar Wine Festival – also known as the Goethe Wine Festival – celebrates Goethe's birthday on August 28th every year in a highly symbolic location: directly in front of his former residence on Frauenplan. Goethe himself was famously a connoisseur of fine wines, making the festival more than just a market – it's a literary and culinary meeting point.
Almost all German wine regions are represented: Mosel, Saale-Unstrut, Rheingau, Pfalz, Baden, Württemberg, Franken, and others. Winemakers pour their wines directly from their tents and are available for expert discussions. The wine selection is complemented by a "Weindorf" (wine village) featuring regional Thuringian specialties – from Roster to Mutzbraten.
At the opening, Wine Queens from the growing regions, prominent guests, and representatives from politics, business, and culture gather. Regional music groups entertain on all festival days, with convivial socializing being the main focus. Over the years, the festival has taken on a Volksfest character and is, alongside the Zwiebelmarkt (onion market), one of the most important culinary events in Weimar's calendar.
Weimar is an independent city in Thuringia and, with its classical heritage (Goethe, Schiller, Bauhaus), has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996. The wine festival anchors this tradition in the annual city calendar, making Frauenplan the heart of the city for four days.
The 2026 edition spans from Thursday to Sunday and frames Goethe's birthday on August 28th. The festival traditionally opens with the presentation of the attending Wine Queens and a welcome speech by the city.
