Three Advent markets in the mining community in the Saarbrücken Regional Association
Quierschied — with a good 13,000 inhabitants, located in the middle of the Saarkohlenwald forest — cultivates an unusual Advent tradition: instead of a central Christmas market, the three districts each host their own, on different Advent weekends. This creates a small tour that can be spread throughout December for residents of Saarbrücken or Saarpfalz — and it shows how much identity in the Saarland is still tied to local districts.
The Christmas market in the main town of Quierschied traditionally takes place on the first Saturday in December on Triebener Platz and in the adjacent Marienstraße — from 1 PM to 10 PM. Clubs, schools, and church communities run the market stalls, the sports club provides catering, the church choir sings, and the fire department arrives with the Christmas tree. Mulled wine, bratwurst, gingerbread, handmade crafts, raffles — the typical Saarland district market mix with a family-friendly atmosphere.
The district of Fischbach-Camphausen is an old mining village. The Camphausen mine was one of the central hard coal mines in the Saarland; today, the site serves as an industrial monument recalling the past. The Christmas market takes place on the Saturday before the 1st Advent from 2 PM to 10 PM — a format that kicks off the Advent season on the very first weekend, often honoring the mining tradition with a miners' choir and a Mettenschicht (miners' vespers) service.
The third market takes place in the district of Göttelborn — on the Saturday before the 3rd Advent, starting at 2 PM, in the so-called Konzertwald (concert forest). This former mining area, now enhanced as a recreational area, offers an unusual atmosphere: a market under trees, with mulled wine at wooden stalls, heated fire pits, and live music from regional choirs. Those looking for an Advent alternative to the large city markets will find an almost intimate version here.
The municipality belongs to the Saarbrücken Regional Association, the district that also includes the state capital Saarbrücken, Völklingen, Püttlingen, and other municipalities. Those staying in Saarbrücken can visit the Quierschied markets as a day trip — easy to reach by public transport (saarVV) and the A8 motorway.
Three small Advent markets in a mining community — not a tourist highlight program, but lived neighborhood care. Those who want to experience the Saarland's Advent life in its authentic form, without pushing through the crowds of the Saarbrücken Christmas market, will find themselves in the right place in Quierschied.
The exact dates for 2026 will be announced by the municipality of Quierschied in late summer/autumn 2026. Based on experience, the three markets follow the established rhythm: main town on the 1st Saturday of December, Fischbach-Camphausen on the Saturday before the 1st Advent, and Göttelborn on the Saturday before the 3rd Advent. We will update the fiche upon publication of the official dates.
