The grand ceremonial session of the traditional Mainzer Klepper-Garde 1856 at the Electoral Palace
The Mainz Saalfastnacht (indoor Carnival) scene comprises a multitude of traditional clubs that host their sessions annually, collectively shaping the architecture of Mainz's indoor Carnival. The Mainzer Klepper-Garde 1856 e.V. ranks among the oldest of these clubs. Founded in 1856 — during the early phase of modern Mainz Carnival, which emerged as organized indoor Carnival in the 1830s and 1840s — the Klepper-Garde combines 170 years of club history with a continuous presence in the Mainz Carnival season.
The Große Prunkfremdensitzung is the Klepper-Garde's main format within the session calendar. It adheres to the classic Mainz Grand Ceremonial Session dramaturgy: a festive character, representative guard performances, selected speakers from the Mainz Carnival scene and nationally renowned guests, high-quality musical and dance contributions, and a broad spectrum from classic session formats to modern show elements. The venue is the Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral Palace) on Peter-Altmeier-Allee, one of the city's most beautiful and acoustically best indoor Carnival halls — a historic palace building with large halls that hosts dozens of sessions, balls, and Carnival events each year.
The Sunday date (February 1, 2026) places the session in the middle phase of the Mainz Carnival campaign, approximately three weeks before Rose Monday. This period is characterized by dense weekends of sessions, where Mainz's major clubs share the venues and host their events. By choosing Sunday, the Klepper-Garde utilizes a typical session day that attracts audiences from Mainz and the surrounding region.
A special feature is the after-party in the Schlossgewölbe (Palace Vaults). Unlike many sessions that conclude with closing remarks and the Narrhallamarsch (Carnival march), the Klepper-Garde extends the evening with a dance and social event in the historic vaults of the palace. This creates a continuous evening that combines the focus of the session with the conviviality of a ball. For regular attendees, this combination is a hallmark of the Klepper-Garde session; for newcomers, it's an attractive extension of the classic session format.
The 2026 edition continues the Klepper-Garde's annual session tradition. The Sunday date places the session in the middle weekend of the campaign, approximately three weeks before Rose Monday. The Kurfürstliches Schloss, with its grand hall and historical substance, provides the ideal, typical setting for Mainz Carnival sessions. The guard performances, speaker lineup, and musical contributions follow the classic Grand Ceremonial Session structure, complemented by the Klepper-Garde's signature after-party in the Schlossgewölbe.
The exact program and speaker lineup for 2026 will be published by the Mainzer Klepper-Garde in January 2026. The structure follows the proven cornerstones of previous years: session president and opening, the club's dance troupes and guest performances, several speakers delivering political-satirical and humorous presentations in Mainz dialect, popular bands, a closing tableau with the Narrhallamarsch, followed by an after-party.
