Advent market in the historic spa town
The Weihnachtsmarkt Bad Salzelmen is one of the most beautiful small Advent markets in the state of Saxony-Anhalt. It traditionally takes place on the first weekend of Advent on the historic market square of Bad Salzelmen — the very place where Bad Salzelmen, as an independent town, was once organized around its salt works and brine baths. Today, Bad Salzelmen is a district of Schönebeck (Elbe), but the town centre has retained its small-town atmosphere.
The market is manageable — and that's its charm. Stalls offering mulled wine, roasted almonds, and regional products line the market square. For families, there are carousels, a puppet theatre, and craft activities. The highlight on Saturdays at 3 PM is the appearance of Santa Claus, who collects children's wish lists. Parents can do their last-minute Advent shopping in the surrounding shops or visit the district museum, which also offers special opening hours during the market.
Bad Salzelmen is located in the Salzlandkreis, about 15 kilometers south of Magdeburg, in the south of the state of Saxony-Anhalt. The Salzlandkreis owes its name to the salt deposits that shaped the region for centuries — Schönebeck was one of the most important German salt towns. The Advent market in Bad Salzelmen complements the larger Schönebeck Christmas market on Rathausplatz and is a wonderful alternative for those seeking a quieter, small-town Advent market experience.
The supporting association of the Salzlandkreis district museum is the organizer. The market is financed by stall fees and volunteer work. Free admission — as befits a village and district Advent market.
The 2026 Weihnachtsmarkt Bad Salzelmen is planned for the first Advent weekend — likely Saturday, November 28, and Sunday, November 29, 2026. On the Bad Salzelmen market square in the Schönebeck district, locals and guests meet to kick off the Advent season. Binding dates and detailed program will be confirmed by the supporting association of the district museum shortly before the market; the linked city portal and the website of the Salzlandmuseum will provide information from November onwards.
Detailed program and final dates will be published by the district museum's supporting association in November 2026.
Schönebeck (Elbe) is located about 15 kilometers south of Magdeburg, accessible via the A14 (Schönebeck/Calbe exit) and by S-Bahn line S1 (Magdeburg–Schönebeck). From Schönebeck main station, it's about 2 kilometers to Bad Salzelmen, reachable by bus or on foot. Parking is available around the Salzelmen market square.
Free admission. Open on Saturday of the first Advent weekend from 1 PM. Exact opening hours and daily program will be announced by the district museum's supporting association shortly before the market days.
Bad Salzelmen is known as a brine spa town — the Solbad (brine bath) and the Gradierwerk (graduation tower) invite you for a stroll. The Salzlandkreis district museum is located directly on the market square and often has special opening hours during the market.
