A Village with Mining Heritage

Göttelborn, now a district of Quierschied, was one of the most important hard coal mining sites in Saarland for decades. The Göttelborn mine closed in 2000 as one of the last Saar mines – its shaft facility now stands as an industrial monument at the Konzertwald. The fact that the village community is still alive is proven every year in August by the Dorffest, which is supported by strong club life.

When Does the Festival Take Place?

Traditionally on the first weekend of August. For 2026, this is expected to be Friday, July 31st to Sunday, August 2nd, 2026 – the exact date will be published at short notice on the website of the municipality of Quierschied, as usual.

What to Expect

If you want to experience a classic Saarland village festival, this is the place to be. Throughout the weekend, local clubs organize a varied program:

• Friday evening: Opening with barrel tapping, live music until late
• Saturday: Club stands during the day, big stage program in the evening
• Sunday: Morning pint, culinary delights, and family program

The Mini Playback Show

The undisputed highlight is the Mini Playback Show – a format that is traditional in many Saarland villages, but is taken particularly seriously in Göttelborn. Children and adults from the village imitate their favorite stars in costume and choreography. What sounds like a harmless club evening is actually a lovingly staged spectacle that draws a full festival tent every year.

Culinary Delights

At the club stands, you'll find what belongs to a festival in Saarland: Schwenker (pork cutlet grilled on a Schwenkbank), Lyoner, Dibbelabbes, Hoorische, Flammkuchen, and cakes from the club women's bakeries. Drinks are served by the clubs for the benefit of their treasuries.

Location and Surroundings

Göttelborn is located north of Saarbrücken, on the edge of the wooded hilly area between Quierschied and Friedrichsthal. The Konzertwald, right next door, is suitable for a walk before or after visiting the festival. Industrial culture fans should head to the former mining site – an impressive testament to Saarland's heavy industry.
