The largest non-commercial Christmas market in the region — Tradition since 1986
Gartenstadt is a district of Mannheim that emerged in the 1910s — one of the early German garden city settlements based on the English model of 'garden city'. Today, around 7,800 people live here in a richly green residential area with low-rise housing and many single-family homes. The heart of the district is the Bürgergarten at the corner of Kirchwaldstraße and Waldpforte — a park with a playground, event stage, and a large lawn. This is where the Bürgerverein has hosted its annual Christmas market since 1986.
What began as a small neighborhood initiative in 1986 is now the largest non-commercial Christmas market in the region. With around 30 stalls, it is small compared to the large Mannheim Christmas market at the Wasserturm — but it has a crucial difference: here, neighbors sell to neighbors. The stalls are run by association members, local craftspeople, and private individuals who live in Gartenstadt.
The market traditionally takes place on the Saturday before the 1st Advent. Since the 1st Advent in 2026 falls on November 29th, the market day is Saturday, November 28, 2026 — from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM. This way, the Advent celebrations begin for the residents of Gartenstadt on the first Advent weekend.
The stalls bear the mark of their exhibitors. Here you can find artfully carved wooden figures, handmade pillows and textiles, knitted scarves and hats, pottery bowls, handmade Advent wreaths, Christmas music CDs by local choirs, and occasionally experimental pieces from the Gartenstadt art scene. For culinary delights, the stalls offer homemade jam, honey from the Gartenstadt beekeeper, cakes and cookies from local kitchens, mulled wine, and non-alcoholic hot drinks.
The exhibitors donate a portion of their income to the traditional Christmas campaign of the Bürgerverein — a relief effort for needy families in the district that has been running for decades. Thus, the market combines Advent coziness with active neighborhood help, making the Christmas market more than just a consumer event.
Since the 1st Advent in 2026 falls on Sunday, November 29, the Christmas market in Bürgergarten will take place on Saturday, November 28, 2026 — the traditional market date 'Saturday before the 1st Advent'. Opening at 11:00 AM, closing at 8:00 PM.
Around 30 stalls from the Gartenstadt neighborhood will fill the Bürgergarten. The organizer is the Bürgerverein Mannheim-Gartenstadt e.V., which has been nurturing this format since 1986.
Admission to the market is completely free. Food and drinks at the stalls are at cost price plus a small markup — the market is non-commercial. Mulled wine approx. €3–4. Gift items at the exhibitors' individual prices (typically €5–30).
