Saarland's Advent Magic on Dillingen's Market Square
Dillingen/Saar is located in the western Saarland region, in the district of Saarlouis, and has been a significant steel city since the 17th century – Dillinger Hütte is one of Europe's largest heavy plate producers. This industrial identity merges with a warm-hearted Christmas market during the Advent season, bathing the city in a sea of lights for three days.
Dillingen's central market square is transformed into a Christmas market at the end of November – with traditional wooden huts, the typical fir tree lighting, and a miniature train that takes children around the area. The organiser is Kultur- und Citymarketing Dillingen/Saar (KCM), which organises the market in close cooperation with Dillingen's retailers and associations.
Sweet and savoury specialities – from Saarland Lyoner sausage and candied almonds to crêpes, potato pancakes, baked apples, and stollen – are offered alongside craft stalls: fashion accessories, natural cosmetics, Advent wreaths, nativity figures, and Christmas decorations await visitors. Mulled wine, punch, and cold beer complete the offerings.
Highlights of the stage programme include the "Singing Christmas Figures," who move from stall to stall on Saturday evening from 5 p.m. onwards, singing Christmas songs and oldies with accordion and drums. On Sunday afternoon (1:30 p.m.), the children's choir of the Philipp-Schmitt-Schule sings Christmas classics. A chainsaw artist carves individual wooden figures live for the audience on Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
St. Nicholas reads stories every evening and brings sweet surprises for the children. The miniature train on the market square is another family attraction. The market traditionally ends with the "Christmas Shopping Sunday," during which the shops in Dillingen's city centre are open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
The exact dates for 2026 will be officially published by KCM Dillingen in autumn 2026. The established structure with three market days, Singing Christmas Figures on Saturday evening, a chainsaw artist on Sunday, and the children's choir is expected to be maintained.
Detailed programme for 2026 will be published by KCM in November 2026. The traditional structure is as follows:
